Two is always better than one, right? Well, in the case of rats, this is a true statement. Rats are social animals and get lonely without a companion. Of course, this means you have to come up with two names, which isn't always easy. Check out these ideas for when you get two new furry friends:

  • Tom and Jerry (from the cartoon);

  • Yin and Yang.

Which name is better to choose?

When carefully choosing a nickname for a rodent, breeders often do not limit their imagination, as they use various sound combinations for the pet’s nickname, which is surprising, and human names are also suitable for naming a decorative rat. Rat breeders often call their pets rare, and at the same time sonorous names - Dollar, Cent, Lord, Klepa, Caesar, etc.

Rules for choosing a nickname

More often, rats have very simple nicknames that are familiar to human hearing, such as Masha, Lyalya, Gosha, Vasya, etc. It happens that breeders are in no hurry to give nicknames to their pets, and simply call them affectionate words - baby, little rat, baby, glutton, thus complicating life for both yourself and your pet.

As practice shows, rats remember best those sounds that are most often pronounced when handled.

And if you constantly change nicknames, decorative rats stop reacting adequately to your words and actions. Not all rats always respond to such nicknames.

Why does a rat even have a name?

By giving the baby rat a nickname, breeders automatically elevate him to the rank of personality. And now it’s not entirely important whether he will respond to this or that nickname assigned to him, or maybe you’ll just use tapping and whistling. The main thing is that for you he will no longer be one of many, but almost like a dear little lump. And it is this little lump that will be an individual in its life. Magic!

This is not so important if your rat has an incorrect diet. In addition to the name, the rat needs additional accessories for the cage. This will help a lot with training, the carrot method, so to speak. The more confident a rat feels inside the cage, the better, and confidence comes when you have the opportunity to add rat accessories to the cage. More fun - responsive rat

How to name a rat girl

It is advisable to choose a name for a girl rat that is affectionate, gentle, and not offensive, although the rat does not understand much about this, but the breeder is pleased, after all, she is a lady. The rat itself is a very smart animal. Her inner intelligence needs to be used to the fullest, then you can build mutual understanding with her. And if you manage to find a common language with your decorative rat, then it will be easier for you to understand what your pet really wants, and it will gradually begin to respond to the nickname assigned to it.

There is no need to neglect consonance in names. The rat has a very good ear for music, so it costs nothing for a girl-rat to determine who is speaking to her.

Sometimes breeders select names for a female rat from the pantheon of pagan female names: Vesta, Juno, Ceres, Hera, Minerva, Diana, Athena, Cybele. It is also interesting to select paired names of Greco-Roman goddesses: Megaera - Furina, Gaia - Terra, Dido - Elissa, Muse-Kamena, Elythia - Lucina, Hecate - Trivia, Hemera - Diesa, etc.

How to help a mouse remember its name

You need to start accustoming a mouse to a nickname no earlier than the animal gets used to its habitat. Once in a new house, the mouse hides in the house for the first time, coming out only at night to eat the food left for him. Next, he will begin to come out of hiding and get acquainted with the situation, including his newfound owner.

  1. The first stage of accustoming to the name is the owner talking to the mouse in a calm voice. In this case, it is advisable to place the cage away from bright light sources, in a quiet corner. Additionally, it can be covered with thick fabric.
  2. In dark conditions, the decorative mouse is deprived of its main source of information, so it learns to focus on the remaining sense organs - sound, and subsequently the smell of the owner. As soon as the animal begins to respond to a person’s voice and begins to approach the bars of the cage, it can be given treats as a reward - pieces of apples, slices of black bread, fresh twigs.
  3. The procedure for accustoming your pet to its name in the dark should be continued for 7-10 days. After this, the fabric can be replaced with a thinner one that allows some light to pass through. Over the next week, the owner should calmly repeat the pet’s name and reinforce its desire to communicate with tasty bites. At this stage, you don’t have to put the treat on the floor of the cage, but leave it in your outstretched hand. The sounds of a person's voice, his smell and the sight of a hand with food will gradually calm the mouse and allow for increased communication.
  4. To complete the taming, you can reach out to the mouse with a treat in the light of day. At first, the animal may get scared and run into the house. You need to give him time to calm down, then offer him a treat from your hands again. It is important not to make sudden movements, speak quietly and gently. Very little time will pass, and the decorative rodent will greet its owner (and the accompanying smell of delicious food) with a joyful squeak.

The animal must trust the person who will accustom it to its nickname. Therefore, the new owner should immediately get used to talking to the mouse calmly and not suddenly grabbing it in his hands.

Accustom a decorative mouse to accept its nickname, as well as train it to perform a number of tricks. You can start at the age of 4-6 months, when the animal is as open as possible and perceives everything as a game. But if the first months of your pet’s life together with its owner are missed, you shouldn’t be upset – you can train your pet rodent throughout its entire life.

When thinking about what to name a mouse, you should choose names for girls and boys based on your own tastes and preferences. There are no nicknames “fashionable” or “unfashionable”, “beautiful” or “ugly” if the owner sees that his pet fully corresponds to the chosen name. The decorative rodent is a cute, playful and friendly creature (as long as the owner pampers it with treats), so the likelihood of calling it incorrectly is almost unrealistic. And to make sure that you made the right choice, you just need to watch the mouse at home for a while - and the nickname will appear on its own.
