The hamster is a soft fluffy bundle of joy. During their short life, the sweetest, friendly Djungarian and Syrian hamsters become favorites of children and the most unsentimental family members. Their little hearts contain great love for their owners.
During their short lives, hamsters are susceptible to various diseases and injuries. The physical suffering of hamsters during illness and old age is a huge psychological stress, especially for young children. To stop suffering, there is a humane, but morally difficult way for animal owners - euthanasia.
In what situations should you euthanize your hamster?
Euthanasia of a hamster is reasonable and permissible for conditions that cause suffering to the animal and have no chance of cure:
- various injuries in which the pet is physically unable to live actively: back injuries, traumatic brain injuries and bruises with serious injury to internal organs;
- diseases that do not have effective treatment and a favorable prognosis, most often these are malignant neoplasms characterized by metastases in various organs and severe pain;
- damage to the nervous system, manifested in aggressive behavior towards household members;
- advanced age of hamsters, accompanied by pain, loss of the ability to move and eat;
- congenital diseases in which the animal is doomed to death.
It should be remembered that only a veterinarian is able to diagnose a hamster’s condition that is incompatible with life, in which euthanasia is the only correct solution. In such cases, the owner’s duty is to alleviate the suffering, and not to kill the pet.
How to put a rat to sleep painlessly
Humane euthanasia of animals, in which cases is it necessary:
- Incurable animal diseases: oncology, cancer, kidney, heart failure and others.
- Doesn't eat on his own, constantly lies down and can't get up.
- Weight loss, weight loss, exhaustion.
- Refusal to eat, drinks only water, indigestion of food, vomiting.
- Infectious diseases that cannot be treated with medications for a long time.
- Injuries incompatible with life, fractures, paresis, paralysis.
- The animal suffers from pain, groans, howls.
- A healthy animal in the absence of the opportunity to keep it at home and the risk of throwing it out into the street.
- Congenital pathologies in animals are incompatible with normal life.
Euthanasia and cremation of healthy animals is possible in the presence of the owner, as well as without his presence. On the street, at the entrance, near the car.
How to euthanize a hamster
When making such a serious decision as euthanizing his pet, it is very important for the owner that the hamster does not suffer, but falls asleep painlessly. This procedure can only be trusted to a veterinarian, having clarified the effect of pharmacological drugs for euthanasia.
Unscrupulous veterinarians carry out killings without anesthesia, using means to immobilize and block breathing.
The humane procedure must be carried out by a veterinary specialist using narcotic and painkillers that block the functioning of the nervous system and disable pain sensitivity.
You can say goodbye to your little friend, after which the doctor administers anesthesia to the animal, the hamster slowly falls asleep and no longer feels anything. A drug is then injected to cause the heart to stop or block breathing.
The specialist must confirm the fact of clinical death 5 minutes after the procedure. The owner can take the hamster's body for burial or leave it at the veterinary clinic for cremation.
Putting a hamster to sleep at home
It is more convenient to carry out the pet euthanasia procedure at home due to a number of advantages:
- there is no need to transport the pet to the clinic, which is extremely undesirable in case of serious injuries and serious illnesses;
- the pet does not experience stress from the hospital atmosphere, and spends the last minutes of its life in its own walls with its beloved owner;
- veterinary specialists carry out visits at any convenient time, carry out humane killing with the provision of the necessary psychological assistance to the owner of the animal;
- the price of euthanizing a hamster at home is the same as when carrying out the procedure in a clinic, and is about 1,000 rubles.
Euthanasia of an animal in a clinical setting
Euthanasia of a pet can also be carried out at a veterinary hospital. The owner signs the consent, the doctor puts the hamster under anesthesia and then administers a drug to stop the heart; if desired, the procedure can take place in the presence of the owner. The owner takes the hamster's body with him or leaves it at the clinic for subsequent cremation.
You must love your pets and fight for the health of your tiny friends, but if it is impossible to cure the disease and save the animal, the most humane solution is to euthanize the hamster, this way you will save your beloved hamster and your family members from pain and suffering.
Euthanasia - what is it?
Euthanasia is a painless medical way to end a life and alleviate end-of-life suffering. So far this term is legal only for people. In medicine, euthanasia can only be performed with the personal consent of the patient. But in Russia this procedure is prohibited in relation to people.
When it comes to animals, things are a little more complicated. Legally, today an animal for its owner is property that he disposes of at his own will. This means that only the owner should make the decision to end the life of his pet.
This issue is discussed more deeply in the draft of the not yet in force animal protection law.
Veterinarians also use the term “euthanasia” for this procedure and adhere to the same principle of painless care. Any other action towards an animal that causes pain or results in its death already falls under the definition of “cruelty”.
Attention! In veterinary medicine, the term “euthanasia” is equivalent in lexical meaning to the term “euthanasia”.
Now it's my turn. The story of a hamster (yes, you heard right)
Good day.
Many of us have pets. Including me. We will now talk about the Syrian hamster. Peach. Peach. Peach. He was 2 years and 5 and a half months old. They live for a maximum of three years. It seems to be a long-liver, but it will not be enough for any owner.
It all started with the fact that in recent months his coat became less beautiful. It was peachy and orange. It became faded gray. But I still loved him, no matter what he was. With such a symptom, the veterinarian would have twisted a finger at my temple. Then it began to appear in spots, like light moles, the “scented glands” increased, but nothing changed. He ate, slept, ran, didn’t bite, why bother with my pensioner.
The fur has lost thickness and has become thin. Well, he ate, didn’t bite, and went out at night to sit in the wheel, on the roof of the house.
A week ago I began to walk, not exactly limping, but not quickly, and like a duck. I've been overeating on food all week, only tasty treats. Well, who am I to stop the boss from eating only the goodies from the bowl? Well, he drank a LOT of water, didn’t lick himself, walked under himself.
Yesterday I decided to clean the cages. I cleaned the dzhungarika's cage. I take Peach's cage. The corners of the cage are clean, everything is in the house. The peach does not open its eyes, did not squeak, did not bite. I brought him into the bathroom so that he could walk around while I washed the cages and peed. Well, what can I do, I’ll wash the towel for drying the cells. He walked poorly and was thin all over. But that's where the kidneys are. The size of a large bright yellow tennis ball. Can you imagine? (Not table tennis, by the way). Well, I definitely haven’t recovered. I saw that he was feeling bad. I was scared. What should I do? I called the doctors, went to wash my face, and collected my things and money. I called a taxi. I'm going to open the cage, I pick everything up. I take it in my hands. He bit me for the first time in my life. And he tried to run away from me. Through the window of the house. He was pinched. The back part did not allow him to run out, although usually he preferred the window rather than the door of the house. At that moment, everything inside me just broke. I'm scared for the pain that I indirectly caused.
We arrived to the doctor. He said right away that he is not a ratologist, they usually don’t apply for such a thing, because... This is a “consumable item” for many good people. But I looked anyway. He grabbed me by the withers. The withers never returned to their previous state even after euthanasia. Dehydration is terrible. Provided that he drank water actively and that I gave vegetables. Didn't run, didn't walk from the doctor. Even when the kidneys were palpated, there was no sound or open eyes. I asked the doctor if he was in pain? I asked how long he would live if he tried treatment or did nothing? He said to try treatment for two weeks, not to treat for a couple of days. But there is nothing to help here. Diagnosis: incompatibility with life.
I had a couple of minutes to think. I called my husband, he didn’t answer. I called my mom. I didn't take it. There is only one left. Even the doctor came out. And I decided that, after all, the question of life and death of living beings is the competence of man.
I couldn't go with the vet and be still. She asked me to leave. I came out and everything inside just shrank. After two or three minutes, I still didn’t understand, time passed quickly. Allowed to enter. The jar with the hamster was empty. He brought it. He said that he didn’t squeak and left very quickly. He offered to open it up and find out exactly what happened to the kidneys, but, in my opinion, beyond eternity it doesn’t matter. There was an option for disposal at a cattle burial ground, as it should be, but the doctor saw how hysterical I was. He allowed me to take it with me. The worst thing was to touch the once nimble ray with your hands. I was afraid to feel the cold. Purely psychologically, it was easier for me to do this wearing surgical gloves.
As yesterday’s doctor said: “Take it a little easier, when buying an animal, we are renting it from death.”
By the way, this was without anesthesia, but with a relaxant. Because the anesthesia is intravenous, and where can you find veins in such a tiny thing? The relaxer simply doesn’t allow you to move. It was possible without him. I asked for a relaxer. But the fact is that he was so weak that any little thing would have finished him off.
Giving five stars is just okay. Even more so to recommend to friends. It even sounds crazy. Take care and love your animals.” The “Landlord” is not asleep.
The review was written because I did not find any cases of rodents in the branch. Maybe this will help someone. And it’s probably easier for me to accept and understand the loss. Any pet is worthy of love, compassion, and has the right to leave without suffering. I will not raise theological topics about murder by the wrong hands, about a terrible sin. I have my own truth about this. The choice is always yours.
After this incident, I realized that I would not let any of my charges suffer if this happened.
Tame, cute hamsters are convenient to keep in a city apartment.
They are often kept in families with children, because these animals are non-aggressive and safe, and do not require care. But they live on average about 2-6 years.
Many people get sick by this time, and in old age they suffer from weakness and helplessness.
To save your pet from suffering, you have to resort to a difficult decision - euthanasia.
Today it is practiced all over the world and is considered a humane way to relieve suffering.
The appearance of hamsters in the country: causes and signs
Hamsters are not afraid of the company of people; they often choose a place to live in gardens and vegetable plots. They can also live in residential premises, but on the condition that there is enough food inside and outside the premises. Let's consider the main signs indicating the presence of hamsters on a personal plot:
- minks;
- footprints;
- travel routes;
- eaten or bitten vegetables and fruits;
- small tunnels leading to plant tubers;
- eaten bark on the bottom of trees and shrubs.
In what cases is euthanasia necessary?
Responsible veterinarians will decide to kill only if there is a serious reason that causes suffering and leaves no chance of salvation.
These include:
- Injuries that make it impossible to live a full life. These include a spinal fracture, bruises that caused severe damage to internal organs, traumatic brain injury, and others.
- Malignant tumors when treatment has failed. The disease is accompanied by severe pain, metastases and quickly leads to death. In addition to tumors, there are other deadly diseases for which there is no cure yet.
- Aggression towards others, which does not allow keeping a pet at home. More often it is caused by disturbances in the functioning of the brain and central nervous system.
- Old age, accompanied by wear and tear of the body, loss of the ability to move independently, eat food, and severe pain is possible.
Congenital diseases or defects that make life unbearable.
It is important to understand that only a veterinary specialist can make a correct diagnosis and make a prognosis regarding further treatment.
If possible, it is worth contacting several doctors, and if they all confirm the impossibility of providing help and alleviating suffering, decide on euthanasia.
How does euthanasia occur?
The first stage is the introduction of anesthesia, which turns off the central nervous system. The hamster falls asleep and does not feel anything, and after a few minutes the veterinarian moves on to the second stage. At this moment you can say goodbye to your four-legged friend.
The second stage is the introduction of a special drug that stops the heart. The veterinarian declares death, after which he can take the body to the veterinary center for cremation or leave it with the owner, and he himself decides on the burial problem.
A professional must use narcotic and painkillers, otherwise the procedure cannot be called humane - the animal will die in agony.
Benefits of euthanasia at home
The service of calling a veterinarian to your home is in demand, for a number of reasons:
- no need to transport the animal to the clinic (in case of severe illnesses and injuries this is highly not recommended),
- comfort – the pet will feel calm in a familiar environment and next to a loving owner,
- the ability to choose a convenient time for a specialist to arrive, including at night and on weekends,
- the price for services is the same as in a veterinary hospital.
Experienced veterinarians are dispatched; veterinarians have the necessary medications to carry out the procedure, as well as experience in psychological support in a difficult situation. The owner will also be asked to take the body to a veterinary center for general or individual cremation.
Euthanasia in a veterinary clinic
If the procedure at home is not suitable for some reason, it is also performed in a hospital.
To do this, you need to bring the animal to the clinic, where, after signing the consent, the doctor will administer anesthesia, and then the drug itself to stop the heart.
The owner will be able to be present during euthanasia if he wishes.
The body remains at the veterinary center for cremation, or the owner takes it with him.

I'd just keep it at this point
Nono, I don't feel bad. This happens to many people and animals in nature.
The only option would be to do it Yeller style. If you can guarantee instant death, you can at least guarantee a painless death. But the idea of shooting or crushing a living creature beyond menacing spiders, let alone a beloved pet, is pretty unimaginable.
I think a person would have to be confused to want to do this, let alone enjoy it, but sometimes the best thing for a creature is a quick, painless death. This is, of course, more than nature gives to the weak, the wounded, the lost and the hungry.
When I had a chicken that had a bad encounter with a dog, I went to several popular chicken forums for advice. One of the things that was suggested was to get some flexible hose and attach one end to the car exhaust pipe and put the other end in a hole in the side of a plastic storage container. Make sure the trash can is completely covered with duct tape and turn on the car. It was proposed to do this at least outside.
Living in the inner city, neither veterinarian had ever dealt with chicken, but between me and a friend of mine who is quite experienced in not getting proper care for chickens, we cured the chicken. After 6 months you couldn't tell what it was unless you picked them up and knew what to look for. At least my little bird had a happy ending.
CO2 is actually very painful, why go, from what I hear. It feels like your veins are on fire. This is one of the main reasons why lab rats are not euthanized anymore (and many people are truly incompetent at this, so it results in a lot of suffering).
Nitrogen asphyxiation is much more humane.
CO, not CO2. Carbon monoxide. As far as I know, it's completely painless because it doesn't feel like you're choking. More and more CO replaces the oxygen in your lungs until you lose consciousness, and from there death by asphyxiation. It has long been called the silent killer, both because it is so deadly and because there are no warning signs for it (fatigue, drowsiness, etc. can be attributed to a variety of other things), which is why OSHA requires CO detectors and homeowners are highly recommended have them.
FWIW, the reason it hurts (it feels like burning) when you choke on CO2 is because our bodies are designed to react to too much CO2 in the blood. and not too little O2. So, if you were breathing in CO2, you would immediately know you were suffocating because your body would scream at you to get it, to replace it with oxygen. As far as I know, he doesn't do this for any other gas because it would be too useful.
In fact, they still euthanize mice this way. I had to do this many times at my last job and I hated it.
A high pressure gun would probably be the fastest and most humane way. One day the cat tore up a mole badly and then left him on the front step with an ounce of life left, so my dad and I just took a quick shot to get across the bridge, so to speak. I would only recommend it for small animals. I'm not sure it would be a clean kill if it was much larger than a mouse.
Edit: I'm talking about one of those pump rifles that shoots steel at 100+ meters per second. Do not use an airsoft gun.
Yes, I think hunting is often considered "humane" because it is instant death when shot correctly. My dog once got a rabbit but didn't kill it, just wanted to play with it and chew it. One .22 shot quickly ended his suffering.
Decapitation with a shovel. Easy and fast. I think?
Decapitation does not happen instantly. Better to crush the skull. Sudden, complete destruction of the central nervous system is painless but terrifying. That's why they stopped shooting horses in the head when they broke their legs - it was humane, but hard for people to watch.
Yes, but we are talking about the suffering of the animal, and not about the weakness of the stomach of people. Wouldn't shooting the heart work too?
I think it may be a little slower as it will not immediately destroy the nerve center and pain receptors. I'm by no means an expert.
Gunshot victims have been known to run for 20-30 seconds without a heart. If you are not in shock, it will hurt like a mother until you pass out, which takes 20-30 seconds due to hypoxia in the brain.
If you completely destroy the brain, the animal will no longer be able to feel pain. You feel pain in your brain. If your brain no longer exists, you can no longer feel pain.
No, your brain is dying from lack of oxygen, so it's almost as slow as suffocation, plus now you also have a hole in your chest and possibly a punctured lung.
It's much faster than suffocation. A piercing heart means no heartbeat, no circulation—negative circulation, I guess, as you will lose blood returning to the heart. In an adult, the time from complete cardiac arrest ("shot to pieces", I think is just a very extreme form of cardiac arrest) to loss of consciousness is about 20 seconds. It would probably be much shorter than something the size of a hamster, given that smaller animals have proportionately higher metabolic rates and significantly higher heart rates.
Actual death may take a little longer (usually 10+ minutes before "really" dying for humans, although every minute around 6-8 brings an exponentially increasing risk of permanent brain damage due to lack of oxygen), but they will be unconscious and unable to feel pain, cold, warmth or anything else.
I just shared a story about how shovels are NOT easy, especially for a beginner. In any case you would want to get blunt force trauma due to decapitation, it's a shovel, not an axe.
I had a co-op that included a pest trap, but we ran out of neckbreaker traps and I used the leg trap on autopilot.
At the end of the day I returned to the poor injured animal. Since maintaining it was the opposite of my job, and it was painful enough to be an easy target, there was nothing left to do but grab a shovel and go for the kill without mercy, lest he be eaten alive.
It wasn't as fast as any of us would have liked. Some of them were professionals at it, I heard later, but I think it took practice.
So I certainly wouldn't recommend the hammer approach to anyone unfamiliar with extermination methods.
I have a chicken coop that attracts field mice. When cleaning, they scurry everywhere. I accidentally killed several people just by exploding with a broom.
We had a hawk kill a chicken last weekend. They do this by simply tearing a hole in the chests and eating the organs. Nature can be quite cruel sometimes.
This is fucking terrible. The fact that anyone could suggest this is just disgusting.

Putting a hamster to sleep
- various injuries in which the pet is physically unable to live actively: back injuries, traumatic brain injuries and bruises with serious injury to internal organs;
- diseases that do not have effective treatment and a favorable prognosis, most often these are malignant neoplasms characterized by metastases in various organs and severe pain;
- damage to the nervous system, manifested in aggressive behavior towards household members;
- advanced age of hamsters, accompanied by pain, loss of the ability to move and eat;
Why do hamsters eat their babies?
Let's consider the reasons why hamsters eat their children, as well as the solution to this problem.
The hormonal background is not formed
Young females, less than or equal to 4 months old, have an underdeveloped maternal instinct. This leads to the animal simply getting rid of the problem. This may also be due to the lack of production of the required volumes of milk or weakness after childbirth, but most often the young mother simply does not want to waste energy on her offspring.
Stress, fear
Hamsters do not have a stable nervous system, so after giving birth the female, due to weakness and exhaustion, reacts negatively to any stimulus. Loud noises, bright lights, strangers, and other hamsters in the immediate vicinity of the cage can cause extreme stress for mom. Because of this, the animal decides that it is impossible to raise offspring in such conditions and eats the cubs.
Human intervention
Each animal has its own natural smell, by which its fellows recognize it, and also identify its natural enemies. If you hold small hamsters in your hands, they will smell like you. Because of this, the female, smelling an unfamiliar smell, will think that the cubs are strangers. After this, the aggressive mother will kill the young, since they are no longer her offspring.
Presence of a male in the cage
After giving birth, the male turns into something like a target for the female. The mother begins to force the father out of the cage in every possible way, which results in the same stress. Only in this case it is the male who suffers, who is not satisfied with this order of things. Main motives:
- killing of young animals as a result of jealousy;
- killing the cubs, which will allow them to mate with the female;
- murder as a defense against mother's aggression.
This problem can be solved by placing the male in another cage.
Unhealthy offspring
If young animals are the result of close relationships, then they may suffer from genetic abnormalities or be underdeveloped. In this case, the rule of natural selection operates, which tells the mother to kill her children. In this case, it is better not to stop the hamster. Sick offspring are unlikely to survive.
Numerous offspring
When too many children are born, the mother faces the problem of a lack of milk. If at the same time she consumes little succulent food, and is also not provided with the necessary volumes of water, then a decision will be made to kill part of the young animals in order to leave at least a few offspring.
Female health status
If the hamster is sick with something, then its condition will worsen significantly after birth. The mother will not be able to provide food for the offspring while remaining alive. As a result, there is a law that many animals follow: if the female dies in the process of raising the young, then the cubs will die, so it is better to kill the offspring than to die herself.
In this case, it is necessary to carry out treatment as soon as possible in order to prevent tragedy. It is worth remembering that cannibalism can also be associated with mental disorders.
Hypnotic drugs for temporary euthanasia of animals
Temporary euthanasia is not quite the correct formulation. It is more correct to call this manipulation general anesthesia or general anesthesia. Moreover, this should not be confused with sedation:
- with general anesthesia, the animal is medicated into a state intermediate between sleep and unconsciousness, retaining only unconditioned reflexes;
- During sedation, the animal is in a depressed state of consciousness.
In general, sedation has an analgesic effect and is similar to mild general anesthesia.
Temporary euthanization of the animal is required to carry out any manipulations with it, for example, during labor-intensive surgical interventions. Sedation is carried out for simple manipulations that require a calm and relaxed state of the patient.
These types of “euthanization” are not directly related to euthanasia because do not interrupt the life of the animal, but are used for its treatment. But there is still something in common between them - these are the drugs used.
Injections
For temporary euthanasia and euthanasia, the same drugs are used, but in different dosages. The method of administration is also the same, in accordance with the instructions for use.
The most common among them is Propofol and its veterinary analogues: Anestofol, Propovan, Vetfol.
- This non-inhalation anesthetic agent is used for euthanasia of dogs at a dose of 10-20 mg per 1 kg of live weight. Since different manufacturers have different concentrations of the finished solution, the dosage in ml/1 kg of live weight will differ. The introduction is slow, intravenous (at least 30-60 seconds depending on the volume).
- For temporary euthanasia, Propofol is used in dogs at a dose of 6.6 mg/kg live weight. It is also administered intravenously, slowly over 30-60 seconds.

In addition to Propofol, barbiturates can be used for euthanasia: Sodium thiopental, Hexenal pentobarbital, Phenobarbital, Zoletil, etc.
For temporary euthanasia, use 1% Anestofol, Domitor, Dorben, Zoletil, Xila, Xilavet, Xylanit, Meditin, etc.
When euthanizing, after putting the dog under deep anesthesia (stages 4-5), the doctor administers an intravenous injection to stop breathing and/or the heart.
Most often, 25% magnesium sulfate (magnesium) is used for this purpose in particularly large doses (2-3 times higher than the maximum allowed according to the instructions). This remedy has a pronounced relaxing effect on the muscles, lowers blood pressure and inhibits respiratory function.
Attention! Using this drug without first inducing anesthesia causes extremely severe physical suffering. In addition, if this drug gets past the vein, under the skin, it causes a severe chemical burn (like calcium chloride).
In addition to magnesia, you can use lidocaine or muscle relaxants (Ditilin, Lystenon, Adilin) in extremely high doses, but for painless euthanasia, general deep anesthesia is also necessary before their administration.
Pills
Tablet forms of drugs are not used in veterinary medicine for euthanasia. This is due to the fact that this method of administering the drug does not ensure rapid absorption into the blood and distribution throughout the nervous system.
Tablets can only put the dog into deep sleep and harm the nervous system against the backdrop of powerful intoxication. It cannot lead to a quick and painless death.
Putting a hamster to sleep at home
It is more convenient to carry out the pet euthanasia procedure at home due to a number of advantages:
- there is no need to transport the pet to the clinic, which is extremely undesirable in case of serious injuries and serious illnesses;
- the pet does not experience stress from the hospital atmosphere, and spends the last minutes of its life in its own walls with its beloved owner;
- veterinary specialists carry out visits at any convenient time, carry out humane killing with the provision of the necessary psychological assistance to the owner of the animal;
- the price of euthanizing a hamster at home is the same as when carrying out the procedure in a clinic, and is about 1,000 rubles.
Benefits of euthanasia at home
Home visits are one of the most popular services of our veterinary clinic. VetMir specialists carry out not only diagnostic and therapeutic measures at home, but also perform euthanasia.
Advantages of inviting a professional to your home:
- convenience – a clinic employee will arrive at any convenient time, without breaks or weekends,
- safety for the rodent, especially one in serious condition, since it will remain at home next to the owner,
- affordable prices and quick arrival of a professional in an emergency situation,
- full range of funeral services.
Our specialists have everything necessary to provide qualified care outside the hospital, they know how to support you in difficult times and will answer all your questions.
Euthanasia in a veterinary clinic
The procedure can also be performed in a veterinary center. The client independently delivers the pet to us. Doctors conduct an examination, prepare for the procedure and perform euthanasia within half an hour. The owner can be next to the pet or wait in the corridor.
Everyone has the right to use the cremation service or take the body away for further burial.
24-hour operation of the veterinary clinic with on-site visits to Moscow and the region

How to quickly and humanely kill a rat
In most cases, when people set rat traps, the animals die from poisoning or a broken spine when caught in the rat trap. However, if your traps are boxes and buckets that the animal can get into but cannot get out of, then you need to decide how to humanely and quickly kill it. In this article you will learn about what to do if you catch a rat and how to kill it, the better way to kill it so that it does not suffer.
IMPORTANT! Under no circumstances should you show children scenes of the killing of any animals, including rodents. This can seriously traumatize their fragile psyche! Only a trained person can kill a rat without consequences. Usually this is an adult man with a tempered psyche, who is confident in what he is doing, because... wants to protect his family, home and supplies from pests.
Precautions and preparations
First of all, you need to list all available humane and non-lethal methods of getting rid of rats. Today there are a lot of traps, thanks to which a caught rat can continue its life outside your home. For example, having caught an animal in a box or in a special container, it can be taken far into the forest and there released into the wild. You don't have to kill the rat.
It is best to simply take the rat away from people's homes, for example, into the forest. But no closer than 5-7 km, otherwise the rat will easily find its way back.
If there are no other options other than to end the rat’s earthly life, then you need to prepare for murder. To prevent a rat from biting you, you need to wear thick rubber gloves, a jacket or sweater with long sleeves, and it is advisable to pull the gloves over your sleeves so that there are no exposed skin areas. These animals are capable of attacking people in case of danger.
Next you need to find out about the rat’s well-being. If she is injured, then the decision to take her into the forest can bring the rodent even more suffering than a quick death. You will have to make a serious moral choice.
When killing, do not irritate the rat. In panic, she may begin to break free, bite and even run away. Don't run around her, don't scare her, don't shine bright lights or make noise. Do everything slowly and calmly so that the rodent remains calm too.
In any case, never decide to kill a rat if there is even a remote possibility of getting rid of it alive. You can always release it in the nearest park or on the highway when you are traveling somewhere. Killing, even a rodent, leaves a mark on the human psyche, which for some people can be a serious shock that will have to be dealt with with the help of a psychologist.
Think 10 times before deciding whether to kill a rat or release it into the wild.
FAQ
Question No. 1. How do ultrasonic repellers work?
Scaring methods are associated mainly with sharp and vibrating sounds, which disorientate and negatively affect the psychosomatic state of rodents.
Question No. 2. If you decide to fight hamsters with chemicals, how to determine the main entrance to the hole?
The vertical entrance to the hole is considered the main one, the rest are considered spare ones. If the entrance is located in an open area and is clearly visible, most likely this recess is a false hole leading to a dead end.
Question No. 3. What poisonous additives are strong and can kill a rodent the first time?
Strongly toxic additives include all types of rodenticides, which contain zinc phosphide and arsenic compounds.
Question No. 4. What chemicals are used to treat hamsters' travel paths?
To treat the paths of movement, rodenticides intended for pollination are used. Not only rodent paths pollinate, but also exits from burrows. This method is effective, since toxic substances enter the lungs and intestines of hamsters in the process of licking fur and paws.
Question No. 5. What are the benefits of long-acting chemicals?
Long-acting poisons contain chemicals such as coumarin, phentolacin, and indodione. They have no taste or smell, and do not cause alertness to the bait, since the substances act slowly, without painful symptoms. After several meals of poisoned food, rodents die suddenly.
Strangulation method
This method can be considered the most humane in relation to the rat, since the animal experiences a minimal amount of pain and discomfort and often does not even realize that it will soon die.
First, find any plastic container at home. This could be a food organizer, boxes for various office supplies, and so on. Then place the rat itself in the container. Handle it with care and caution so that the rodent does not become nervous.
In a small cup or other flat container, mix vinegar and regular baking soda, which are found in any housewife's kitchen. Fill the bottom of the container with the mixture or simply place it in the original cup. In just a few minutes the rodent will lose consciousness and die very quickly. When baking soda reacts with vinegar, it begins to release carbon dioxide, which is impossible to breathe.
The use of carbon dioxide is the only officially approved method of killing rats through asphyxiation. If you want to use something else, you can find the necessary information about chemical reactions on the Internet.
The main reasons for dealing with hamsters at the first sign of their appearance
You should start fighting hamsters at the first sign of their appearance, due to the following reasons:
- Hamsters are constantly in search of food, thereby causing irreparable damage to plants, trees and shrubs.
- It is known that hamsters lead a solitary lifestyle, but when they find a nourishing area, they share this information with their relatives.
- Due to the high fertility of hamsters, in one season hamsters are able to populate more than one hectare. From April to October, a female brings up to a hundred cubs, since pregnancy lasts no more than 16 days, and the number of cubs born is from 5 to 20. After only 2 months, females from the first litter are considered sexually mature and capable of having their own children.
- Grown-up baby hamsters constantly feel the need to chew something, this is mainly due to sharpening their teeth. In the first few weeks, the young come out of the hole and begin to gnaw on everything that comes their way.
- Hamsters quickly transmit information related to threat and danger. Hamsters begin to avoid dangerous areas, ignore baits and even create false paths leading to an abandoned hole. Thus, a huge number of effective control methods become useless.
Drowning
Another of the easiest ways to kill a caught rat is to drown it. If you catch a pest in a bucket or barrel, you can cover the animal with a thick rag and put a heavy object on top so that the rat does not jump out. Then simply fill the container with water.
But here you will have to try to ensure that the rodent is well pressed to the bottom, because, sensing the approach of death, it can get a surge of strength and try to escape from under the load, so it is recommended to press the rag with a stick and hold it there for several minutes until it choke and die. You can simply pour the dead animal out of the bucket and prepare a trap for subsequent rodent catching.
Firearms
If you have caught a very huge rat that cannot be strangled or drowned, then you can use a firearm or pneumatic weapon. Of course, not everyone has such a thing, but hunters and simply weapon collectors can use this method to quickly kill a caught rat.
So, first you need to decide which caliber to use. It is best to use small-caliber weapons, since a rat is not an elephant after all, there is no point in taking out a shotgun or sawn-off weapon to kill it. When using such a weapon, there is a high chance that after the first shot the rat will literally leave a wet spot, not only on the floor, but also on the walls. Moreover, the ricochet of a bullet can greatly harm you.
You can use an air pistol, but you need to aim directly at the rat's head
Choose a place to kill. You should not shoot in the house, chicken coop or basement; it is much better to do it in the backyard or in the barn, as long as there are no other people nearby whom you could accidentally injure.
You need to shoot strictly at the head. Of course, a shot at any part of a rat’s body will be fatal for it, since it is small and fragile, but if it hits the head, the risk of suffering and pain from the wound is much lower. The rat will die instantly, and will not suffer before death.
Weapons can only be used by people who have already dealt with them and know how to handle them. If this is the first time in your life that you are holding a pistol or shotgun in your hands, it is better to put it down and find another way to get rid of the rat.
Comparison of control methods: advantages and disadvantages
Each method has advantages and disadvantages. Before deciding on the choice of method of fighting hamsters, read the table, which shows the main advantages and disadvantages of the methods.
Name | Advantages | Flaws |
Traps (traps, mousetraps) | A simple method that does not require physical or material costs. Trapped rodents have no chance of surviving or escaping from the trap | After some time, they begin to recognize the traps and avoid them. Inaccessible to rodents that do not come to the surface (cubs, pregnant women) |
Flooding of holes | Pregnant and young animals are selected to the surface. Females often carry their young in cheek pouches. | Without traps installed at the output, this method is ineffective |
Digging holes | Pregnant and young animals are selected to the surface. Females often carry their young in cheek pouches. | Requires physical effort |
Smoking | Pregnant and young animals are selected to the surface. Females often carry their young in cheek pouches. | Without traps installed at the output, this method is not effective. |
Ultrasonic repellers | Easy and safe to use. The most humane way to control rodents | Requires constant battery replacement |
Chemicals | Death occurs both after a single dose of the drug and after 2-3 days. Not addictive. | Some substances included in the composition may cause an allergic reaction. |
Edged weapons and blunt trauma
This method can only be used if you are sure that your actions will kill the rat the first time. Otherwise, you will have to cause the animal terrible suffering before death.
There are cases when people finished off wounded animals with a precise blow to the head with a hammer or any other heavy object. For example, if a cat played with a hamster and caused him serious injuries, after which he will no longer be able to live normally. In the case of a rat, you need to aim well and put as much force into the blow as possible. Such an act is quite difficult emotionally. After all, if you cannot kill the animal right away, you will have to beat it to death. And this is very difficult for the psyche.
Don't listen to those who advise putting the rat in a bag and hitting it against the wall. Rodents are not so fragile that they would die from a strong blow to concrete or wood. Most likely, you will not have enough strength (neither moral nor physical) to hit the bag so that the animal instantly dies, and it will lose consciousness. And when he wakes up, he will experience hellish pain from broken bones and internal bleeding.
Chemicals intended to kill hamsters
The chemical method of controlling hamsters is through deratization. Deratization is the destruction of rodents using chemicals called rodenticides. Rodenticides can be purchased in specialized stores.
The most effective chemicals that can cause the death of hamsters after a single dose of poisoned bait include:
- Varat is a chemical preparation whose main purpose is to kill rodents. The drug is a ready-made poisoned bait in the form of granules. The drug is used in the autumn after harvesting, as well as in the spring during the period of lack of food for hamsters.
- Rodenticide “Clairat” is available in granules and is used as a ready-made bait. Destroys almost all types of rodents. Use in dry weather. Due to the high toxicity of the active drug, processing is carried out by special services.
- Rodenticide “Final MB” is a paste-like mass, a ready-made bait. It has a strong effect, a single use is enough to kill a rodent.
- Rodenticide 2nd degree “Rat Death” is a ready-made, poisonous bait in the form of a dough-like mass. Used throughout the year.
Broken spine
Before you begin these methods, first decide for yourself whether you can do this with your own hands. And you will have to do far from pleasant things, namely break the animal’s spine. This is perhaps the most brutal method to kill a rat described in this article. We do not recommend using it.
Carefully pick up the rat and place it on some lumpy or uneven surface so that the animal can cling to it with its paws. This will allow access to his spine.
To carry out the “operation”, find a long and round object at home. Scissors, ballpoint pens, screwdrivers, metal rods, and so on may be suitable. Then take the rat by the tail, press the object on the neck, in the area that is slightly closer to the head, and quickly pull the tail back. If you did everything correctly, you should hear a peculiar sound of a broken bone. With such a sound, the rat's spine broke at the base of its tail. After this, the rodent will die, however, not immediately. Rats, like lizards, can live without a tail, but unlike these green animals, they cannot regrow it. You can read about the structure and features of a rat’s tail here.
If you tear out a rodent's tail, it will be alive for some time and will experience terrible pain from a broken spine, then paralysis will set in, and in this state the animal will die for a long time and painfully.
Therefore, it’s up to you to decide whether to torture the rodent for all its harm to you and humanity, or to show mercy and choose a different method of killing. Or maybe it’s better to just release the animal into the forest, away from people’s homes, because then you will have a big plus for your karma.
it would seem difficult, but everything seems simple

How to do without veterinarians when it comes to euthanizing ornamental rats
How to do without veterinarians when it comes to euthanizing ornamental rats. At home, as you understand, it is not possible to euthanize rats. You can only kill with suffering. Unless, of course, you are some doctor who can come up with something himself.
I will advise you on several effective ways to kill your favorite sick decorative rats. You can’t give the sick to anyone (on Avito) and it’s a pity to kill them.
There are two effective ways to get rid of it. The first is to drown
, second to let go
. In order to drown, you will need a container in which the rat can fit and a sock or other bag. First, you need to prepare water in a container. You put the sock on your hand and take the rat by the ass, with a sharp movement you twist it so that the rat is in the sock up to its head. Drown the rat and wait for it to die. You can, of course, pour boiling water into the container so that you don’t have to heat it manually, but just throw it in there. When he dies, you can not remove it from a sock or other bag, but simply throw it into the garbage chute or bury it.
Do you live near a park? But who cares, it's a rat! You shove it into a cage, the cage into a bag and take it to the park. Find an uncrowded place and just let them out, say goodbye and quickly leave before they burn. That's all.
I’m writing this because I had the same situation. Xena always has pets: cats, parrots, rats and hamsters. All of them live much less than a person, so in my lifetime I meet their death every time. Sometimes you have your own, but more often you have to kill yourself, because the world around you is poison. There were two rats, small at first, but on all kinds of food - seeds, they grew 14 cm long. One was female, the other was male, and accordingly, according to the canon, babies were born. Some, still small, were given away. They kept the others for themselves, and lived like that. My parents, who are already 4 years old (supposed to live for 2 years), began to get cancer, but do not intend to die - it’s painful to watch the torment. The cancer is right under the paw, and some people can’t even get up from it: lying down, they snort, eat and drink. Accordingly, Zena decided to take this one to the veterinarian, and then 500 rubles for ONE rat is robbery! As soon as I found out, I began to look for a method of deliverance myself and came up with methods that I wanted to share with everyone. Actually the whole story.
